The Walnut Project 2014

This was my pilot project for commencing my Master of Art by research degree. In The Walnut Project, I restricted all my investigations to material elements derived from the walnut tree and researched the history and uses for this particular tree.

To obscure vision, stimulate touch, movement and induce smell, vertical lengths of muslin cloth dyed with walnut ink and infused with walnut smoke hung from ceiling to floor throughout the space. The cloth behaves like dispersing tendrils, billowing in and out.

Sound was roused by burnt walnut wood cinders spread over the floor and crunched underfoot. Visitors could mark make on paper using the walnut ink I prepared.
