Biography

Leonie Ryan

Leonie Ryan was born in Melbourne, Australia in 1965. At age six she moved with her family to Gippsland, where growing up in a rural area her life was occupied with explorations of the surrounding countryside. Ryan has worked across a vast range of disciplines including installation art, sensory art, sculpture, photography, collage, performance and since 2017 ceramics. In 2016 Ryan completed Master of Fine Art. Between 2010 to 2012 was awarded Bachelor of Visual Art and Design and Master of Visual Art at Monash University. In 2008 she was honoured to receive Artistic Merit Award from Monash University and in 2007 a Regional Arts Victoria award.

In 2018 Ryans art practice paused for two years due to a family crisis. She mainly focuses on raw materials, process, design elements from mid-century modern, forms from ancient text and varied representations of the abacus. Ryans processes of abstraction and distinctive artistic language, offers space for different perspectives.

Ryans art studio is based at her countryside residence in Victoria where she practices during Summer and Autum. Throughout the Winter months she practices from her residence near the Daintree rainforest in Far North Queensland.
